More than just a Physio.

Movement Theory is about empowering & educating clients to take control of their own physical health & well-being to help create a life where movement is efficient, sustainable & pain free.

Our mission is to provide innovative physiotherapy solutions for our clientele. We are dedicated to continuous learning, forward thinking & have the best interest of our clients front of mind at all times.

We understand that providing “generic” treatment options for common clinical presentations may not always work for everyone; which is why we provide a range of treatment modalities that are specific to each individual client.

Motion is Lotion.

This little phrase that our Head Physio Rod uses quite regularly is a memorable way to convey the helpful effects of movement for any painful condition! Generally, with most pain, too much rest can lead to people stiffening up and getting more pain overall. Moving regularly keeps our joints and soft tissues more flexible and less painful. Over the past few years in the midst of our Covid pandemic, many of us were unable to participate in our normal physical activity and/or are spending long hours working in home “offices” that are not set up properly.

Our body’s soft tissues – ligaments, tendons, muscles, and fascia will shorten and tighten if not moved through their full range regularly. This is one reason why a joint has reduced range of motion after being in a cast for several weeks. If those soft tissues are also inflamed, this phenomenon is even more pronounced. With inflammation, the soft tissues will also get more swollen when held still for long periods, for example overnight.

Luckily, we can limit this effect! When sore inflamed tissues are moved gently and regularly in a non-aggravating way, they will actually become less painful. This is true while you are doing the movement, and also for overall pain levels as the injury or condition heals. Motion is Lotion also applies to persistent pain conditions. Many patients with arthritis or back or neck pain have learned that regular daily, appropriate, exercise is a good way to manage their painful symptoms.

Movement means your joint fluids will be nice and oily, you will start to move and reduce swelling, get air right down to the base of your lungs, nourish your nervous system, get stronger and lessen the chance of diabetes and cardiovascular disease - how good is that!

 FAQs

  • Yes.

We accept all private health funds, NDIS, Return To Work SA, DVA & Enhanced Primary Care Plans.

  • Please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your initial appointment to complete our intake form if you haven’t done it online prior to your appointment (& enjoy a coffee or tea!)

Our initial consultations last 45 mins. During this time, your therapist will extract as much information as possible in order to provide you with the best course of action. We will perform movement and strength assessments as well as getting a detailed picture of why you may be in pain, or have reduced strength & mobility. Some treatment will also be performed during your initial assessment which may include manual therapy (myofascial release, dry needling, cupping) or some movement based treatment modalities such as clinical pilates, weights or cable machine work.

At the end of your treatment, your therapist will create a treatment plan which corresponds to your specific goals & expectations!

  • We have 2 main appointment types here at Movement Theory. Our initial appointment goes for 45 mins and is designed for new clients who haven’t attended the clinic before, or existing clients who haven’t seen us in a while and have a new presenting condition. After your first appointment, your Physiotherapist may recommend a follow up appointment of either 45 mins (long subsequent consultation) or 30 mins (standard subsequent consultation). 45 minutes give our therapists time to look at multiple areas of pain, whereas the 30 mins appointment is designed to focus on one area.

  • It is best to wear comfortable clothing, but we totally understand if you are in your work clothes. We take pride in making you feel 100% comfortable, so adequate draping will be used with towels to ensure modesty. Shorts and a tee shirt/singlet are highly recommended.

  • At Movement Theory we are extremely hands on. We use manual therapy techniques such as cupping, dry needling, & trigger point therapy as required.

If you’ve never experienced myofascial release, cupping or dry Needling, then you may be in for some pain or discomfort. This is generally a short-term experience, and does get easier the more your body becomes used to it. Some of our movement based modalities such as clinical pilates can leave you with some delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) for a few days. Although we try our best to limit discomfort, our treatment approach is designed in a way to achieve the best possible outcomes in improving strength, range of motion & decreasing pain.

  • You are more than welcome to bring any scans or other medical investigations that you feel may be worth our therapists knowing about (all documents can be emailed to us at info@movementtheory.com.au). If you are on medications, a list of all you are taking will be beneficial. Most of all; bring an open mind! Our therapists are highly trained to think outside of the box, in order to provide an innovative approach to Physiotherapy.
